LAS CRUCES, N.M. — UH-Hilo junior Dylan Bercan shot two under to tie for tenth-place and lead the Vulcans at the NCAA Division II West/South Regional Championship on Saturday at the New Mexico State University golf course.
After a first-round card of 76 (+5), Bercan got in the zone — shooting 68 (-3) in the second round and 67 (-4) in the third to rocket up the leaderboard and finish in a three-way tie for tenth-place with Chris Chomyn of Stanislaus State and Colin Huang of Sonoma State.
Bercan also finished among the top ten during the Pacific West Conference championship last month in Puako.
Colorado Christian’s Dylan Arthur was the regional tourney’s individual champion, shooting -9 (72, 65 and 67).
Despite Bercan’s top-ten finish, the PacWest champions were unable to net a low enough team score to reach the top five and advance to the national championship.
UHH shot +33, tying for 16th place with CSU East Bay and CSU San Marcos — dropping several places from after the first round on Thursday.
The top five teams, in order, were Western New Mexico (-2), Oklahoma Christian (E), Colorado Christian (E), West Texas A&M (+2) and CSU Monterey Bay (+13).
After Bercan, the Vulcan’s next-highest placers were PacWest individual champion and fifth-year senior Nicholas Gomez and freshman Dysen Park — who each shot +11 to finish among a five-way tie for No. 66.
UHH redshirt sophomore Jacob Torres carded +13 to tie for No. 78, and freshman Ben Crinella shot +25 to tie for No. 100.
